I wasn’t sure about doing an episode about someone losing their job when Angilie first reached out. We’ve done episodes about terminal illnesses, murder, and stalking, and I wasn’t sure that this quite fit what we normally do. After maybe five minutes, I realized that people lose their jobs every day. Not only does it suck, but it’s traumatic to be laid off, and probably one of the more relatable topics we could cover. I went from not being sure to being all-in.  

Angilie’s career began as a scrub tech, which means she was part of the surgical team at a hospital. It was a little chilly working in the Operating Room, so she eventually ventured over to an entry level position on the administrative side. It’s probably no surprise that she climbed the ladder into management, considering healthcare was in her blood. Things were great until she was called into a meeting and was blind-sided. 

She’d worked there for years, and all it took was 5 minutes to be laid off. She went in, was given a pink slip and a couple boxes, and it was over. It was a different kind of cold than the operating room, but the best word to describe it was cold. It’s always that way. 

Things were tough – she lost touch with coworkers, lost her confidence, and fell into a depression. Her identity was wrapped up in her career, and took some time before she started to look for work again. It didn't go well, but you'll have to listen to hear about that.

Angilie is now a career coach for people going into management. Looking back she can see it was a blessing. It was a little blip that allowed her to take some time to decide what she wanted to do. She's now got her own business and is out there helping others and being a Decent Human Being.
