I Woke Up One Day to the Sound of a Gunshot - With Andy Turner
This week's Decent Fucking Human is Andy Turner, author of Who Turned Up the Silence. His fucked up story is about grief, secrets, false accusations, and fighting back.
Andy Turner thought he had a great marriage. He met his late wife at church, and when she invited him out to coffee he didn't hesitate. They dated and married quickly, and Heather became mom to his three boys. Thirteen years and a daughter later, Andy woke up to a gunshot from the bathroom. Heather had died by suicide, and his fucked up story was going to get a lot worse.
He pieced together that the prior night was an orchestrated goodbye. She clearly wanted to make it memorable for him. They had a playful evening and she made him his favorite meal. There was no obvious indication that it would be anything but another fun night with her husband. It was the last night they ever shared together, but it was also the last normal night his family would have for years. He'd lost his partner, his children lost their mother, everyone was grieving...and then the boyfriends started coming out of the woodwork.
Andy never saw it coming. He thought he had a perfect marriage, but these men insisted she was in love with them, and they believed they were going to have a future with her. Andy said an officer on the scene thought it was a clear suicide, but the men insisted she wouldn't have done it. Even so, Andy has been unable to put the accusations to rest.
Andy came to the conclusion that the only way to fight back is with his voice. The harassment has not stopped, but Who Turned Up the Silence is Andy's attempt to be heard.
