I just wanted to get hit by a car and take me out of all of it

This week’s Decent Fucking Human is Elizabeth. In March 2022 she entered recovery after surviving a life-threatening situation following one too many drunken nights. That sounds scary, but rock-bottom usually is. It was an opportunity to turn her mistakes into a success story, but the following month her father was diagnosed with terminal brain cancer. If you think she could lean on her husband for support, maybe don’t read the next part – he decided to move out in the middle of it all. Elizabeth didn’t say it, but I will – fuck 2022.

We’ve all had bad years, right? One year you get divorced, another your dad is diagnosed with cancer, and in another shitty year you’re fighting addiction. It sucks, but it’s life. You process it, and with a little luck and a lot of work, you move on. But what would you do if all three happened at once?

Luckily Elizabeth is alive, has a fucking therapist and did a lot of work. Settle in Terrible Listeners, because she’s here to tell her story about sobriety, divorce, and grief.
